Music
My mom, my sister, and I all have some musical ability. My mom can play viola, guitar, and sing. My sister can sing and do guitar. Meanwhile I took the approach of playing with MIDI controllers and keyboards. In elementary I was playing in bands and concerts for sports teams as well as playing at the Indiana statehouse. It was...a very large part of my life for a very long time.
Actually composed\put together a sound track during a game jam years ago in college. Was fun phasing between writing code and spicing tracks together into something elegant. I think it's important to have hobbies beyond what you do for a living.
Regardless, prior to coming out I spent a lot of time in the music scene. I enjoyed concerts, festivals, and shows. I was also like early 20s and recently employed in tech in a city where a lot of people would move to for work. Back then I would put red streaks in my hair and dress in insanely bright colors. My bright multicolored hair should not surprise anyone of this part of my life.
I heard some really cool artists. Including a few I heard in person back in college like These Fine Gentlemen and Grey Lamb...smaller artists, but ones I met. Was actually an extra in a music video at one point which is wild to me.
I got to see Bryson Taylor's last show off in Atlanta and have my hands on a FLAC file pretty close to my heart which was released posthumously of his work. Went to EDC Las Vegas in 2019. Attendance in 2024 for those who don't know is believed to be around 540k over 3 days. Of course I was crazy and decided to go by myself. I had met a guy whom I figured I would catchup with, yeah that's a laugh...next to no cell signal and no plan. Was invited to dinner with some artists, saw a lot of lesser known DJs throughout Atlanta, and got some great life advice.
And you know there are the big artists I've seen (Adrenalize, Leah Culver, Armin Van Buren, etc), but it's less that and more the connection with people. I have a small collection of music files acquired from past events in my life, recommendations from my friends, or songs I heard at concerts.
You would think oh...you're very technical, you have all this infrastructure surely you have deployed something like Navidrone right for streaming all your files? No...it's just a dead simple rsync job that copies to an SMB drive which syncs to my phone with AutoSync (a completely off the shelf utility). I just like having the files on my devices, there's a certain elegance to that.
Atm...playing a lot of Vana, DeathbyRomy, and "And One". That will probably change down the road.
And yeah this entire section is completely disconnected from a lot of my life story. It's just something I enjoy.
